Hadabima Authority of Sri Lanka has implemented a programme to enhance the living condition of low income families in remote areas in the country and to strengthen the backyard poultry farming which is disappearing from our country.
Mr.Mahinda Amaraweera, Minister of Agriculture had instructed the Hadabima Authority of Sri Lanka to resume backyard poultry farming since there is a very high demand in the country for backyard chicken eggs and meat.
Mr.Sarath Withana, Chairman of Hadabima Authority said that a total of 18,000 backyard chicks were distributed among low income families during the last six months of the year 2022. These 18,000 backyard chicks were distributed among 1800 families. Furthermore, a total of 9500 six month old hens were distributed and the total number of eggs produced was 142,500. The chairman stated that it is expected to distribute 24,000 backyard chicks during the year 2023 as 2000 chicks per month and to produce 480,000 eggs.
The chairman added that the Prime Minister expects to provide egg hatcheries and other infrastructure facilities to Hadabima Authority and they will be able to produce 10,000 chicks per month and also to increase the production of eggs up to 08 million upon receipt of such facilities.
The Chairman revealed this information while participating in a discussion held to review the programmes proposed to be implemented by Hadabima Authority of Sri Lanka for the year 2023.
