“Saru Bimakata – Saru Savibala” : A Discussion on the Two-Year Progress and Future Plans of the Ministry Held at the Mahaweli Centre
A special discussion titled “Saru Bimakata – Saru Savibala” reviewing the two-year progress and upcoming programmes of the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Lands and Irrigation, was held on the 22nd at the Mahaweli Centre. It took place under the patronage of K.D. Lal Kantha, Minister of Agriculture, Livestock, Land and Irrigation.
At this occasion, detailed discussions were held regarding the projects implemented by Agriculture Division and other related sectors during the two years 2025 and 2026, their current progress, and the programs scheduled to be carried out in the future.
Addressing the gathering, Minister K.D. Lal Kantha stated that senior officials should prepare a formal plan for obtaining the support of the trade unions in order to achieve the relevant financial targets.
Expressing views on the attitudinal barriers existing between officials and trade unions, the Minister pointed out that trade unions should not be viewed with a hostile attitude and that they are powerful movements that can be turned into a source of strength for the development process. He also mentioned that a proposal has been made to provide trade union representation on boards of directors.
Pointing out that all state institutions should generate their own income and adopt a system of sharing those profits, the Minister stated that the Milco institution’s profit sharing in this manner is a good example of it.
He said that if any laws or circulars stand in the way of moving the country forward and meeting annual targets, they should be amended so that progress can continue. The Minister emphasized that if the national targets are not met, the economy will not become strong and that people can build a good life only with a strong economy.
Requesting everyone to work together to raise the Ministry’s financial progress to 80%, the Minister urged public officers and trade unions to resolve issues collectively without any division and commit themselves to achieving national targets.
The Deputy Minister of Lands and Irrigation, Mr. Aravinda Senarath Vitharana and heads of institutions under the Ministry of Agriculture and a large number of public officers, attended this event.
