A Special discussion with fertilizer importing companies was held at the Ministry of Agriculture
A special discussion chaired by Minister of Agriculture, Livestock, Land and Irrigation K.D. Lal Kantha and Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Livestock Namal Karunaratne was held today (01st) at the Ministry of Agriculture with the representatives of companies that import fertilizer to Sri Lanka.
Lengthy discussions were held regarding how fertilizer companies should intervene to properly import the required amount of fertilizer into the country for the upcoming Maha season, and the urgent measures to be taken to meet the overall fertilizer requirements. Special attention was paid particularly to the importation of fertilizer types essential to agriculture, namely TSP (Triple Super Phosphate), Urea, and MOP (Muriate of Potash).
The Ministry of Plantations, Department of Export Agriculture, and Department of Cinnamon Development joined this discussion via Zoom technology. In addition, the Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture, Additional Secretaries of Fertilizer, and the Director of the Fertilizer Secretariat, and other officials, as well as the Commissioner and Additional Commissioners of the Department of Agrarian Development were also present to discuss the fertilizer distribution process.
It was revealed that the year 2025 was a year in which a large paddy harvest was obtained in the country. However, data has confirmed that during that year, farmers had used a lesser amount of fertilizer than the amount approved by the Department of Agriculture.
Taking this situation into consideration, fertilizer company representatives assured at this meeting that they are prepared to import the entire amount of fertilizer recommended by the Department of Agriculture for the year 2026 into the country.
The Fertilizer Secretariat pointed out that no fertilizer shortage will be allowed to arise in the country in any way, and that companies have already entered into contracts to import all the necessary quantities of fertilizer.
Minister K.D. Lal Kantha further emphasized that all sectors must work together to provide farmers with their fertilizer needs in a timely and prompt manner, and that the Ministry of Agriculture will continuously and directly intervene towards that end.
