Strategic Discussion to Further Strengthen ‘GeoGoviya’ Towards Data-Driven Smart Agriculture

A special strategic discussion on the future development and long-term sustainability of the GeoGoviya System was held at the Auditorium of the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Land and Irrigation, with the objective of advancing Sri Lanka towards a more data-driven, efficient and sustainable digital agriculture sector.

The discussion, jointly organized by the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Land and Irrigation and the Department of Agrarian Development, focused on further strengthening GeoGoviya, one of Sri Lanka’s key geospatial agricultural information systems, expanding its data and technological capabilities, and enhancing its integration with the Government’s broader digital agriculture ecosystem.

The discussion brought together the Secretary of the Ministry, the Commissioner (Development) of the Department of Agrarian Development, ICT officials, key policymakers and technical experts, together with representatives from the Presidential Secretariat, the National Food Security Technical Committee, the International Water Management Institute (IWMI), and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO).

The discussion marked an important step towards identifying the way forward for developing GeoGoviya as a sustainable, interoperable and data-driven component of Sri Lanka’s national digital agriculture ecosystem, supporting better planning, informed decision-making and improved services to the farming community.
