Monthly Water Management Committee meets at the Mahaweli Authority of Sri Lanka.

The Monthly Water Management Committee was held today (03rd) at the Mahaweli Authority of Sri Lanka. Minister of Agriculture, Livestock, Land and Irrigation, Mr. K.D. Lal Kantha also participated in this meeting. During this, discussions were held especially regarding the challenges the country will face in the face of the El Nino situation that will affect Sri Lanka and the entire world in the future, and how to prepare for it.

During this meeting, all institutions under the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Land and Irrigation submitted their plans regarding how to face the upcoming conditions. The Department of Agriculture stated that it would be more appropriate for farmers to focus on cultivating paddy varieties that can be harvested within two and a half months. Farmers should also pay attention to starting cultivation on time. Farmers should also be inclined to store rainwater.

During the discussion, the Minister inquired whether it would be possible to cultivate maize in areas where paddy is cultivated, and if such a possibility exists, requested that a special study be conducted regarding this matter.

Attention was also focused on the country’s seed requirement for the upcoming season. The National Fertilizer Secretariat informed the Minister regarding the country’s fertilizer requirement.

This occasion was attended by officials representing institutions under the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Land and Irrigation, Ministry of Power and Energy, Ministry of Housing Construction and Water Supply, National Water Supply and Drainage Board, Department of Meteorology, Department of Wildlife Conservation, and Disaster Management Centre.
