Award of cheques in the first phase of “A Place of One’s Own – A Beautiful Life” Housing Assistance Program was held yesterday (25th) in Kandy, under the patronage of the Minister of Agriculture, Livestock, Land and Irrigation, K.D. Lalkantha. Under this program, 523 new houses are expected to be constructed in the Kandy District at a cost of 523 million rupees. On this occasion, 17.1 million rupees was distributed among 171 beneficiaries to commence the construction of 171 of those houses.
Participating in this event, Minister of Agriculture, Livestock, Land and Irrigation, K.D. Lalkantha expressed his views.
First and foremost, we congratulate all the residents who have gained ownership of a home, for being given the opportunity to take even a small step towards a better life than what they had before. This is a national program. A home is a basic human right. Even after 78 years of independence, we have failed to fulfill that basic need of our people. We have to make a great commitment by formulating projects, allocating budget provisions, and engaging our public service officials in order to fulfill that basic need. In such a context, this program can be described as one that operates by combining the government’s contribution, the administration’s intervention, and the labor participation of the local community to build houses, a basic necessity of the people of this country. The success achieved has been made possible through the great dedication of the residents, the National Housing Development Authority, the District Secretary, and other public officials involved in this endeavor.
We have witnessed recently that public officials have worked with enthusiasm, intervening and dedicating themselves to serving the people particularly in the Kandy District, during natural disasters. If that had not happened, the Kandy District could not have been brought to the state it is in today. This is a miracle. Without the dedication of public officials, the country could never have been brought to its current state relative to the disasters it faced. Today, there is a growing sense of motivation in the country that all of us must come together to find answers to the problems of our people.”
