Responsibilities
- The primary role of the Statistics Division is to serve as the central data hub for Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Land and Irrigation ensuring effective data management and dissemination to support evidence-based policy making.
- Inter-Institutional Coordination: Fulfilling the statistical needs of the Ministry by coordinating with the Department of Census and Statistics (DCS), other institutions within the Ministry of Agriculture and external organizations.
- Data System Management: Maintaining and updating a statistical data system essential for informed policy decisions within the agriculture and agrarian services sectors.
- Planning and Distribution: Preparing, printing, and distributing the annual crop production plan for the upcoming cultivation year.
- Forecasting and Estimation: Utilizing statistical techniques to provide timely and reliable projections for crop production and estimation for the agriculture sector.
- Specialized Surveys: Organizing and conducting harvest surveys as per request received.
Activities
- Preparation of the Statistical Yearbook: Compiling and publishing the Statistical Yearbook of the Ministry of Agriculture.
- Crop Production Programme: Formulating the Crop Production Plan for the upcoming cultivation year, which involves systematic data collection and entry, the establishment of production targets, and coordinating the physical printing and distribution of the final document.
- Maintain Trade Database: Update agricultural import and export database which use to fulfil data request when received.
- Conducting Meetings: To facilitate institutional coordination with the Department of Census and Statistics, Department of Agriculture, and Department of Agrarian Development to streamline the fulfillment of national agricultural data requirements.
- Answering Questionnaires and Data Requests: Fulfilling international and national requirements by completing comprehensive questionnaires, providing validated data for Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) indicators, and supplying essential agricultural statistics to the Central Bank of Sri Lanka and the Ministry of Finance, while addressing various ad-hoc requests from diverse stakeholders.
