A special committee meeting of the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Land and Irrigation was held in the Vanni District
The special coordination committee meeting of Agriculture, Livestock, Land and Irrigation for the Vanni District was held yesterday (12th) at the Vavuniya District Secretariat. The special coordination committee meeting, held under the patronage of Minister of Agriculture, Livestock, Land and Irrigation, Lalkantha, was attended by Deputy Minister of Agriculture Namal Karunaratne, Deputy Minister of Cooperative Development Upali Samarasinghe, Minister of Environment Dhammika Patabendi, Members of Parliament of the Vanni District, heads of all institutions of the Ministry, and Chairpersons of the Vanni District Provincial Councils.
At the special coordination committee meeting held with the aim of identifying the problems faced by farmers in the Vanni District and providing prompt solutions, discussions were held on long-standing unresolved land issues in the Vanni District and the progress of rehabilitating irrigation systems that had collapsed following the Ditwah disaster. In particular, discussions were held on the progress of implementing the Lower Malwathu Oya Project, which benefits the district, and the progress, future programs, and currently emerging issues of Ministry projects operating within the district, namely Smallholder Agribusiness Resilience Project (SARP), Integrated Rurban Development and Climate Resilience Project, and Integrated Watershed and Water Resources Management Projects.
Speaking at the event, the Minister further stated that identifying the hardships of the people and acting upon them with sensitivity is the policy of the government. He pointed out that steps will be taken to provide the maximum possible support from the government’s side to address the existing problems, and that officials must intervene more efficiently and in a public-friendly manner in doing so.
