Minister of Agriculture, Livestock, Land and Irrigation, Mr. K.D. Lal Kantha, took part in a special discussion with a Chinese delegation today (20th) at the “Govijana Mandiraya”. During the discussion, Chinese delegation sought the necessary information from Sri Lanka regarding the establishment of a Machinery Hub.
The Chinese delegation also expressed agreement regarding testing of soil samples. It is expected that support will be obtained at the university level for this purpose. The Department of Agriculture, which took part in this discussion, pointed out that machinery needs to be provided centering on cooperative societies. In this regard, it would be more suitable for cooperative societies, other societies and the private sector to be involved in carrying out the work.
Attention was focused on obtaining the machinery required for Sri Lanka’s agriculture namely, machines needed for preparing paddy and other crop lands, machines that prevent post-harvest losses and machines capable of adding value.
In particular, attention should be focused on technologically advanced, modern machinery in order to bring agriculture to a developed level. By using such machinery, higher yields can be obtained at lower cost. The Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Land and Irrigation shows greater interest in this regard and the Minister emphasized to everyone that attention should be paid to establishing these promptly in Sri Lanka.
