Renovation work of the Mahamankadawala tank bund begins.

Under the government’s policy of “A Thriving Nation, A Beautiful Life,” and in line with the “Wari Mahima Ape Urumaya”  national program, the renovation of the Mahamankadawala tank bund and the construction of a gated spillway structure commenced yesterday (02nd) near the Mahamankadawala tank bund, under the patronage of Minister of Agriculture, Livestock, Land, and Irrigation, Mr. K.D. Lal Kantha. The estimated cost for this project is Rs. 83.20 million.

The Minister expressed his views while participating in this event.

“I must say something about the farming community of our country. Not a single plaque installed here states that it was “opened by” a particular individual. They only mention the work that has been done.

There’s something to say about the price of rice too. Don’t forget that the largest amount of money in this country is spent on the farming community. Billions of rupees are spent for the sake of the farmers. People who go abroad and send money back also make payments to farmers. It is not just the farmer who provides our staple food who is important; small-scale tea growers are also vital. The person who exports pepper abroad is also important.

There isn’t demand for our country’s rice in the foreign market. When the Paddy Marketing Board opens its stores, hand over your paddy stocks at that time. Don’t hold on to it waiting for the price to go up further. That’s when what happened this time happens. The fluctuation of the paddy price is a problem. We are trying to keep the price of paddy stable. When costs rise, when production expenses rise, the price should go up. We are going to change that. We will keep the price of paddy as stable as possible, and instead provide relief for the costs that go into that production.

Even though there was a war going on in the world, we did not allow any industry to collapse. We did not allow a fuel shortage to occur. Our private fertilizer companies rendered a great service to the government. They handed over the fertilizer stocks they had to the government, to be distributed to paddy farmers through the Agrarian Service Centers. The price of fertilizer will also come down in the future. We hope that our farming community will think even more about the general public.”

Political authorities of the area and government officials attended this occasion.
