A discussion was held between the Norwegian Consular and Minister of Agriculture, Livestock, Land and Irrigation, K.D. Lalkantha.

Norwegian Consular, Sturle Harald Pedersen met with Minister of Agriculture, Livestock, Land and Irrigation, K.D. Lalkantha at the Ministry of Agriculture yesterday (18), where they engaged in a special discussion.

Special attention was drawn to the agricultural sector during the meeting, and several important points regarding the significance of utilizing renewable energy for agriculture were discussed. The Norwegian Consular presented points on generating energy in several ways. He emphasized that gas could be produced using agricultural waste available in the country. In addition, he mentioned that Norway could assist Sri Lanka in generating energy through wind power, solar energy, and energy derived from ocean tidal waves. A project report prepared in connection with this was also handed over to the Minister at the occasion.

The Consular stated on this occasion that Norway’s attention is focused on identifying areas with agricultural waste and implementing gas production processes in those areas. As observed by the Consular, Sri Lanka produces excess solar energy during daytime hours, and it was pointed out that this surplus solar energy could be used to produce hydrogen through electrolysis of water, which could then be used as a fuel. The hydrogen produced in this manner can be used as a fuel for every sector, including the agricultural sector.
