The farmer communities of some areas could not perform their cultivations properly in five seasons during the past two years due to the drought.
The Minister of Agriculture; Mr. Mahinda Amaraweera, told that the government has spent Rs.38, 000 million to grant drought relief to farmers during the said period.
The Minister made these remarks at a discussion with a group of representatives of farmer organizations at the Ministry of Agriculture at 2018.05.09. Farmer representatives from all districts of Sri Lanka participated in the discussion.
A sum of Rs.32,500 million has already been allocated by the government for the fertilizer subsidy within this year. So also, all arrangements have already been made by Ceylon Fertilizers Company Ltd and Commercial Fertilizers Company Ltd to grant the fertilizer subsidy. The steps have been taken to supply the ordered stocks of fertilizers granted at Rs.500 to Agrarian Services Centers of all districts. Further, the issuance of fertilizers granted at Rs.1500 has been commenced from 2018.05.09 and the Minister instructed that any shortage of fertilizers should not be reported from anywhere by next week.
The required fertilizer stocks have been supplied to the stores of each district and the Agrarian Services Centers can get the fertilizers from those stores.
However, as said by the Minister, all public officials have a responsibility to ensure the timely provision of water and fertilizer to the farmers of our country and the firm actions will be taken against those who default their responsibilities.
