The minister of Agriculture has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on 23.05.2018 with HJS condiments Limited, a subsidiary of Hayleys group of companies to expand the cultivation of Green Cucumber in Batticaloa district in the Eastern Province.

This company receives orders for 22000 MT of green cucumber annually. At present US$ 71852 Mn. are transacted the international market through the exportation of green Cucumber. However Sri Lanka is contributing poorly in this regard to the international market although the demand for green cucumber is increasing by 2.2% annually at the international market.

In consideration of this situation arrangements have been made to get the involvement of 500 farmers in batticloa district in the proposed green cucumber cultivation project which cover 500 acres initially where by green cucumber cultivating farmer could obtain an income of Rs.287,000/- in one cultivation season.

As a whole expected harvest of each farmer per one cultivation season will be 10000kg.

During the past 10 year period the export income in the agriculture sector has gone in the agriculture sector has gone down from 29% to 5%. Giving consideration to this fact Hon. Mahinda Amaraweera, Minister of Agriculture stressed the necessity of taking steps to develop export agriculture with the involvement of producers, marketiers and service providers targeting the income of farmers through value addition of the produce.

With the technological support of the Department of Agriculture in the cultivation of green cucumber the project aims at exporting the harvest to European countries.

This project will be handled through Agriculture Sector Modernization Project of the Ministry of Agriculture. The MOU of this effect has already been signed covering the next 05 year period.

Ministry officials including the Secretary Mr. B. Wijeyarathne joined this occasion.
