A free agriculture insurance for cultivation losses in respect of Paddy, Chillie, Maize, Soya Bean, Potato and Big Onion.

Under the scheme of providing free agricultural insurance to farmers, cover certificates were awarded to them on 28/05/2018 at the Cultural Centre, Nonagama, Hambanthota chaired by Hon. Mahinda Amaraweera, Minister of Agriculture.

Insurance cover certificates were awarded to 25 farmers at this ceremony where a large gathering of farmers in the area attended. Earlier farmers had to pay a premium of Rs. 1375 each per cultivation season to obtain agriculture insurance covers. However at the request of Hon. Mahinda Amaraweera, the government has taken measures to stop the payment of premium by farmers and introduce this free agriculture insurance scheme.

Accordingly farmers cultivating Paddy, Big Onion, Maize, Chillie, Potato and Soya bean are covered under this free insurance scheme. They are entitled to a compensation package up to Rs.100,000/= per hectare at such a cultivation loss. The government has allocated a sum of Rs.5228 million to implement this programme this year (2018) and a similar allocation will be made annually for this purpose.
