Mahindananda Aluthgamage’s visit to Jaffna to look into the problems of farmers in North Region after four decades keeps a record that it was the first visit made by a Minister of Agriculture.
People in the North Region were very delighted with the visit made by a Minister who can be able to speak Tamil Language and felt the difficulties and hardships of farmers.
The Minister who met the Jaffna District Farmers' Organizations at the Jaffna District Secretariat and inquired about their problems and needs and he was able to provide immediate solutions to their issues. The Minister who got the top officials of all the institutions affiliated to the Ministry of Agriculture participated in this event provided them the opportunity to address farmers' issues directly.
The Minister said that the Ministry of Agriculture would provide many reliefs to those who became widows and the disabled due to the war which lasted for thirty years and their economy would be uplifted through 'Sitamu' Farmers' Organizations.
People in the North Region spoke highly of this program carried out by the Minister of Agriculture by connecting North and South regions.
Douglas Devananda, Minister of Fisheries, State Ministers DB Herath, Mohan de Silva, Shashindra Rajapaksa and Suresh Raghavam, the Governor of the Northern Province as well as all top officials of the institutions affiliated to the Ministry of Agriculture were present on the occasion.
