Foundation was laid for this Food Production National Programme 2016 – 2018 at a discussion on 20.07.2015 chaired by H.E. the President on the theme of increasing local food crop production. Within the next 03 year period with the aim of regaining the past glory of the cantrywhich had been famous then as the Granery of the East.

A special workshop was held on 27.07.2015 at the In – Service Training Institute of the department of Agriculture, Gannoruwa, Peradeniya with the participation of Officials of the Ministry of Agriculture, Provincial Directors of Agriculture and Officials of the Mahaweli Authority and the Department of Agriculture on the formulation of Mid Term Crop Production Plan for 2016 – 2018 which was considered as the next step of this programme. Its objective is to lay a foundation to have agricultural revival of the country through a joint effort.

The Conference of the Provincial Ministers of Agriculture chaired by Hon. Duminda Dissanayake, Minister of Agriculture was successfully held on 29th – 30th September, 2015 at the Hotel “Blue Water” in Wadduwa as a collaborative approach of the Central and Provincial Administration. The Wadduwa Declaration was the original seed which gave birth towards implementing a National Food Production Programme.

The inaugural ceremony of the Food Production national Programme 2016 – 2018 was held on 05.10.2015 with the participation of His Excellency the President Maithripala Sirisena and Hon. Minister of Agriculture Duminda Dissanayake. In parallel to this inaugural programmes were held in every district by establishing island wide contribution towards its successful implementation.

Steps were taken to regularize the Food Production National Programme 2016 – 2018 by issuing the Circular No. 01/2015 dated 06.11.2015.

Discussins so far held to ensure the food security culminated in printing and publishing a book which included all aspects relating to the Food Production National Programme 2016 – 2018 and all future programmes are based on this book.

Successful implementation of this programme has been further established through discussion on Monitoring & Evaluation held on 12.01.2016 attended by Provincial Secretaries of Agriculture.

Furthermore discussion held on 21.01.2016 with European Union representatives on the availability of World Bank support towards application of modern technology in agriculture, particularly with regard to the implementation of the Food Production National Programme is another step in its forward march.

Awareness programme was launch to educate ground level officers through district level officers on the Food Production National Programme 2016 – 2018 aimed at consolidating self motivation of the all stake-holders.

By clearly demonstrating state official’s support in this cultivation drive, Food Production National Programme 2016 – 2018, a number of awareness campaigns were carried out by a Staff Grade Officer of the Ministry for the benefit of field officers at district level.

The workshop for preparing agricultural data base relating to Food Production National Programme 2016 – 2018 was held on 29.01.2016 at the Hector Kobbakaduwa Agrarian Research & Training Institute with the objective of making Sri Lanka global village in the field of Agriculture and achieving international level development.
